Warsaw (dpa) - Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski vowed Wednesday his government would do everything possible to pass a law on restitution for private property lost by landowners to Poland's communist regime after the Second World War by the end of the year, according to a government press statement.

The promise came following talks between Kaczynski and representatives of the Jewish Claims Conference, an organization composed of representatives of the largest international Jewish organizations tasked with disbursing funds gained primarily as compensation from Germany to Holocaust survivors.

"The draft law covers all former owners of property nationalized by the state following the Second World War, including persons of Jewish origin," reads the government statement.

"According to representatives of Jewish organizations, the law will correct the injustices of the past, and the Polish authorities can count on their full support on this matter," it said.

The estimated value of private properties confiscated by the communist regime in Poland in the post-war period ranges between 40- 70 billion zloty (13.5-23.7 billion dollars) according to various sources.

Government draft legislation calls for the restitution of some 15 per cent of the value of lost properties. Plans call for restitution claims to be covered by revenues from the privatization of state assets.
