MUNICH - A man who disarmed a retiree on a rampage ended up being shot by jittery police in Munich as he made his escape.
Armed police were called to a yellow-painted city apartment building after a resident, 66, opened fire on neighbours with a small-bore rifle. He discharged 25 to 30 shots, seriously wounding three people.
Another resident grappled with him, managed to snatch the rifle away and ran out of the building. But the police thought the hero was the offender, and shot him in the arm, according to a law and order spokesman.
The offender was found in his apartment with a head wound, possibly caused by a bullet discharged when the two grappled. As he was being taken to hospital, he suffered a heart attack in the ambulance, and officials said he was later in a critical condition.
A police spokesman quoted neighbours as saying the older man had often complained in the past about noise in the building.
