MUNICH - A police special unit Tuesday overwhelmed a man threatening to blow up the Olympic Tower in Munich, a spokesman said. It was not immediately clear what his motives were.

Police earlier cleared the 200-metre tower, built for the 1972 Olympics, while they held negotiations with the man.

Around 100 people who were in the tower's revolving restaurant were able to leave the building using the lifts.

The authorities also shut down the underground rail line leading to the area on the edge of the inner city.

A TV mast on top extends the tower to a total height of 290 metres.
