GESEKE, GERMANY - A German woman, who told neighbours she had left her newborn at a charity to be adopted, was arrested Tuesday when a police sniffer dog discovered the dead baby in her freezer.

The shop assistant had been obviously pregnant one year ago and initially told police she left the child in one of Germany's "baby hatches", where unwanted children can be anonymously abandoned.

Police in Geseke, northern Germany began an inquiry into the baby's whereabouts late last year after a tip-off. Neighbours, relations and workmates all said they were puzzled that the solo mother of two never showed off her new offspring.

An autopsy is to establish if the baby was alive at birth. The woman declined to answer questions. Her two children were put in foster care.
