DORTMUND - Police in Dortmund placed 40 Polish fans under temporary arrest Wednesday ahead of Poland and Germany's Group A late kick-off clash in the city.

A police spokesman said the action was taken to avoid trouble. Thirty fans were taken by police bus to an assembly point, six were detained at the railway station, and four at the stadium car park.

There was a heavy and watchful police presence as Polish and German fans continued to pour into the city, chanting and forming into large groups. Several thousand fans were expected from Poland.
