HAMBURG - German police arrested a man who had held up a bank in the port city of Hamburg on Thursday, ending a standoff without bloodshed three hours after the drama began when several early morning cleaners were taken hostage.

Two of the women managed to safely flee the building, and the offender later told police he was willing to give himself up.

Police also detained three onlookers under initial suspicion that they were associates of the offender.

Police did not disclose the motive for the attack, but armed bank hold-ups which often net only small sums from cashiers' tills have been frequent in Germany in recent years.
