German police said Thursday they had arrested a 33-year-old Polish man on suspicion of stealing a private car belonging to Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

Authorities intercepted the man on Wednesday at the wheel of the vehicle, usually driven by the daughter of de Maiziere, whose remit includes overseeing the security services.

The suspect was nabbed at a rest area on the A4 motorway to Poland.

Police believe he was trying to escape to his home country.

The alleged thief, who was not previously known to police, attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended.
