Berlin -- polar bear on Friday mauled a 32-year-old German woman at the zoo in Berlin after the visitor leapt into the moat surrounding the bear pen, police said.

The unnamed victim, who comes from the Brandenburg region round the German capital, jumped into the water-filled ditch that separates visitors from the animals for unknown reasons, the police added.

One of the bears then dived into the water and mauled her, causing serious injuries.

The polar bears at Berlin Zoo attracted great media attention in 2007 after the birth of the cub Knut, who was abandoned by its mother and survived only by being fed from baby bottles by a keeper. Pictures of the cub appeared all round the world.
