COLOGNE - A plane operated by Spanish airline Spanair caught fire while taxiing towards the runway of Cologne airport on Friday, with passengers having to escape via emergency chutes.

An airport spokeswoman, confirming the incident, said it was not yet determined whether there were any injuries. Passengers were evacuated by sliding down the emergency chutes from the plane's exits.

The spokeswoman said the cause of the fire, or whether it involved one of the plane's jet engines, had not yet been determined.

The fire broke out just before the plane was to take off for Palma de Mallorca.

"On the way to the runway the plane caught fire. Whether it was a jet engine is still unclear," the spokeswoman said.

It was also not yet certain how many persons were on board the plane.
