GREVEN - A pesky wasp triggered an accident on a German superhighway when a driver lost control of his lorry and spilled 15 tons of marmalade jars on the road, police reported Tuesday.

Germany is, like many othr parts of Europe, in the midst of a wasp plague with many people complaining about the insect's aggressive behaviour this year.

The accident involving the lorry carrying marmalade was only one of a series of accidents caused by drivers trying to ward off wasps.

According to police, in one case a woman rammed three cars after she panicked when a wasp began flying around her car.

In the accident on the A1 autobahn near Greven in northwestern Germany late Monday, the 49-year-old driver lost control of his lorry when he tried to shoo away a wasp which had flown into the cab.

The lorry crashed into the pillar of a bridge, while the marmalade jars were spilled onto the highway. The damage was estimated at EUR 100,000. The driver was unharmed.
