11 August 2004 , ULM - An elderly tinkerer in Germany who fixed a chainsaw motor to a lady's bicycle faced charges Wednesday of operating a motor vehicle without a licence. The 73-year-old man from Ulm told traffic officers he had meant his creation to be nothing more than a conversation piece. ULM - An elderly tinkerer in Germany who fixed a chainsaw motor to a lady's bicycle faced charges Wednesday of operating a motor vehicle without a licence.

The 73-year-old man from Ulm told traffic officers he had meant his creation to be nothing more than a conversation piece.

Instead, officers told him that the 2.3 horsepower motor attached to the bike's rear wheel constituted a motor vehicle requiring registration, insurance and an operating licence.

Police confiscated the contraption and sent the man on his way - with a summons and a borrowed bicycle.
