MUNICH - With two weeks to go until the closing date for second round of applications to work as a volunteer at next summer's World Cup in Germany, organisers revealed Wednesday that over 40,000 people have applied to FIFA for the 14,000 vacancies.

"We're very happy about the high number and quality of the applications," spokeswoman Simone Seefried said in Munich.

The volunteers will work in the 12 World Cup cities in areas such as security, transport as well as in stadiums.

"We have applications from all age groups," said Seefried. "A lot of students, but also doctors, judges and even mayors."

Interviews have been carried out with interested parties since August and the last phase of recruitment will take place in January and February of next year. The World Cup in Germany runs June 9 to July 9, 2006.
