BERLIN - The number of people seeking asylum in Germany fell dramatically during the first half of the year, data released Monday showed, with applications dropping by 25 per cent compared to the same period in 2005.

Germany's Ministry of the Interior said 10,809 people applied for asylum between January and June.

This represented a fall of 3,619 compared to the first six months of last year as those granted asylum declined.

The biggest group of asylum seekers came from Serbia and Montenegro. This was followed by Turkey, Iraq, Vietnam and the Russian Federation.
