No plans for European finance minister: Schaeuble
The creation of a eurozone finance minister is not on the agenda as the bloc tackles its debt troubles, Germany's own minister for finance Wolfgang Schaeuble said in a Sunday newspaper interview.
"I don't have a problem with the idea of a European finance minister. But as German finance minister, I say this: Our mission here and now... is to solve the problems as quickly as possible," Schaeuble told Die Welt's Sunday edition.
At a meeting in Paris on Tuesday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced plans to create a "true eurozone government."
Schaeuble said that it was a government in the sense of a steering committee and not a government in the normal sense of the term.
"Without a change to the European treaties, there could not be a European government like you are hearing being spoken about," the minister said.
