Newborn baby abandoned in suitcase in Germany
German police called on the public for information on Wednesday after a one-day-old baby girl was left in a suitcase outside a Hamburg hotel in freezing temperatures.
The porter at a hotel in the northern city was alerted on Tuesday afternoon by a passer-by to an abandoned case. Briefly looking inside, the porter and a colleague saw only clothes and put it to one side, police said.
But around two hours later, the 60-year-old porter heard noises coming from the case and opened it fully to discover the baby, who was then taken to hospital and found to be healthy, police said.
"Since the umbilical cord had been cut in an amateurish way, it cannot be ruled out that the mother is in need of medical attention," police said in a statement.
