Stuttgart/Rome (dpa) - German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has given Pope Benedict XVI a new G-500 Cabriolet finished in a pearly hue, known officially as Vatican mystic white.
The Mercedes is designed as a fair-weather runabout for use by the head of the Catholic Church during his regular Wednesday public appearances in Saint Peter's Square in Rome.
The pontiff's latest car was developed on the basis of the long- running G-series off-roader in cooperation with the Vatican. It took two years to build, said Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart.
The car features a gleaming, white interior with steps up to the back along with a folding windscreen and handrails. The pope can hang onto these when he greets his audiences in a standing position from the vehicle, which does not feature the customary bullet-proof glass.
The papal fleet already includes a number of other Mercedes models, including armour-plated M- and S-class limousines.
