Bonn -- Deutsche Telekom, the German phones giant, said Wednesday it would appoint a former detergents executive, Ulrich Lehner, as new supervisory board chief to replace Klaus Zumwinkel, the chairman who resigned this month.

The sudden departure of Zumwinkel, 64, whose main post was chief executive at world logistics group Deutsche Post, has rattled corporate Germany. He left after a swoop on his home for allegedly setting up a trust in Liechtenstein to avoid private tax.

Lehner, 61, is set to retire in April as chief executive of Henkel, a group making detergent, toiletries and adhesives. He is to join the Telekom board by a court order, and immediately be elected chairman, Telekom said in Bonn.
