New Zealand will be the guest of honour at next year's Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's biggest gathering of publishers and authors, which closed its 2011 event on Sunday.

Iceland's literature and culture was in the spotlight at this year's five-day event, which organisers said saw a slight increase in visitors compared to 2010.

"For us as readers New Zealand is a terra incognita -- and what could be better than the prospect of a journey into the unknown?" Juergen Boos, the fair's director said in a written statement.

More than 280,000 people attended the fair in the western German city, representing a one-percent rise on last year, organisers said. Exhibitors numbered more than 7,300.

"We are in a period of start-ups -- the book sector is entering a new era. The diversity of ideas which is coming out of this mix of energy and technological possibilities is enormous.

"The international book and publishing sector has become much more faceted," Boos said.
