BERLIN - A nephew of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi has been rushed by air ambulance to a hospital in the German capital after being injured in a car crash in Libya, police in Berlin said Thursday.

A police spokesman confirmed reports in the B.Z. tabloid and other city newspapers that Gaddafi's 34-year-old nephew was flown to Berlin on Tuesday after suffering severe head injuries in an auto accident.

After arriving at a city airport, the man was taken by emergency helicopter to a special hospital in Berlin's Marzahn district which deals with severely injured accident victims, said B.Z.

Bodyguards accompanying the man used a suitcase filled with cash to pay in advance for all medical treatment, said the report.

A spokeswoman for the Libyan embassy in Berlin would neither confirm nor deny the reports. "I cannot say anything," said the spokeswoman.

The hospital also declined to comment.
