Moenchengladbach - Three men have been arrested after the body was recovered of an 89-year-old millionairess, who had been strangled, placed in a barrel and dumped in a lake, German police said Monday.
The unnamed woman was found near the town of Brueggen on the Lower Rhine near the Dutch border, police in the city of Moenchengladbach said.
A court has issued arrest warrants against three men, aged 20, 21 and 53.
Police said one of the men had confessed to killing the woman for her money and had led them to her body, which was recovered by emergency services on Saturday. The rope with which the woman was strangled was still around her neck.
According to police, the woman was pushed down stairs on October 6 before being murdered.
She was reported missing by a neighbour, who contacted a daughter living in Switzerland.
Suspicions were raised when the 53-year-old accused, who did odd- jobs for the victim, presented himself as the administrator of her affairs.
Documents apparently giving him the right to dispose of property were quickly shown to be obvious forgeries.
The youngest of those arrested crumbled under police interrogation after a sniffer dog revealed traces of a death in the woman's home.
According to police, the body lay in a cellar and a garage for weeks before being placed in a barrel used for collecting rain water, covered with chemicals and dumped in the lake.
Attempts to get the barrel to sink, by drilling holes in it, failed, and police found it floating on the surface the lake.
