Munich launches bid for 2018 Winter Olympics

The capital of the regional state of Bavaria, Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Games and will be in competition this time around with Pyeongchang, South Korea and the French Alpine city of Annecy.

Munich -- The southern German city of Munich on Thursday announced its official candidacy for the 2018 Winter Olympics, the German Olympic Committee announced.

"Munich is officially in the race to organise the Olympic Games," committee head Thomas Bach said.

The capital of the regional state of Bavaria, Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Games and will be in competition this time around with Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the French Alpine city of Annecy, both of which have submitted their bids before the October 15 deadline.

A Chinese bid, either Harbin or Changchun, is also expected to be submitted.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make its decision on the host city on July 6, 2011, in Durban, South Africa.
