Berlin - A motorist who needed to relieve himself fell 7 metres from a highway bridge in the dark in Germany when he failed to realize the road was not at ground level, police said Monday.

He mistook the bridge rail for a roadside crash barrier and believed there was grass growing on the other side. His car had been halted in a tailback on the bridge, on the A20 autobahn near Neukloster in northern Germany.

Police said an ambulance crew established that the man, 34, was uninjured other than suffering from shock.
