Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel is far and away the most popular politician in Germany, with 70 percent of the electorate happy with her performance - her highest score to date - according to a poll published in the German press Saturday.

The chancellor's Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) are much less popular, according to the poll by Infratest Dimap, which interviewed a representative sample of 1,000 by telephone.

The CDU/CSU scored just 36 percent of support, against 31 percent for the other major force in German politics, the Social Democrats (SPD).

Merkel leads a grand coalition of the two parties following the inconclusive September 2005 elections, but has emerged into a leadership role above the constant bickering between the two sides.

Paradoxically, 62 percent of those asked are were dissatisfied with the coalition's work.

Another paradox was thrown up by the country's role in Afghanistan.

The poll found that while 52 percent were in favour of the current deployment of 3,000 German troops on a reconstruction mission in the north, 63 per cent were opposed to the sending last week of six reconnaissance aircraft to help the NATO-led combat troops fighting the Taliban in the south.
