German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet her Italian and Spanish counterparts for talks in Berlin in the coming days to prepare for next week's EU summit in Brussels, her spokesman said Wednesday.

Merkel will first receive Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti on Thursday and then Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday, spokesman Steffen Seibert told a regular news briefing.

Merkel and Monti will meet in her office in Berlin at midday on Thursday "for talks to prepare for the next European summit in Brussels on February 7-8," he said.

"They will talk about the economic situation in Italy and the state of Italy's reforms."

The two leaders will issue a joint statement afterwards.

Spanish leader Rajoy and a delegation of ministers will then be welcomed with military honours on Monday.

A joint news conference is planned afterwards, Seibert said.
