BERLIN - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammed ElBaradei, are due in Germany next week for talks expected to centre on Iran's nuclear programme.

Rice is due in Berlin on Thursday as part of a European tour, which will also take in Paris and London.

In addition to Iran, her talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will centre on trans- Atlantic relations and preparations for Merkel's planned visit to the United States early May, deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg said Friday.

ElBaradei is scheduled to meet Merkel and Steinmeier on Monday.

The IAEA has been monitoring Iran's controversial nuclear programme, which is now before the United Nations.

Washington believes Iran is trying to make nuclear weapons, but Iran says its nuclear programme is for power generation.

Germany was one of three European Union nations which last year broke off inconclusive, two-year negotiations with Iran after Tehran rejected calls to suspend uranium enrichment in return for economic benefits and help with civilian nuclear energy.
