Merkel to break off holiday for Love Parade memorial
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will break off her holiday to attend a memorial service in Duisburg on Saturday for the 20 people who died in the city's Love Parade tragedy, her spokesman said.
The 20 were killed on Saturday when panic broke out in a narrow tunnel that served as the only entrance to the techno festival grounds that were reportedly far too small for the number of ravers.
More than 500 people were also injured. The dead included seven foreigners, from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain. Authorities have been accused of ignoring warnings that the venue was too small.
