BERLIN - Designated German chancellor Angela Merkel will be elected by parliament on November 22 - assuming she manages to form a grand coalition of her conservatives and outgoing Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats, sources said Tuesday.

The planned government has already unveiled its cabinet and talks continue over spending cuts aimed at getting Germany's rising budget deficits under control.

Merkel narrowly defeated Schroeder in September 18 general elections.

Under Germany's parliamentary system the Bundestag lower house formally elects the head of government. Schroeder remains in office in a caretaker position until the new chancellor is voted into power and sworn in.
