BERLIN - British Prime Minister Tony Blair and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are the top earners among European heads of government, a report said Tuesday.
Blair earns the biggest annual salary: 268,500 euros (337,000 dollars), said a ranking to be published by the magazine Cicero based on a survey of 13 European states by the Hay Group.
Chancellor Merkel is number two in the European political earnings class with 261,500 euros a year, said the report.
The study did not include heads of states including Britain's Queen Elizabeth II or French President Jacques Chirac.
Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern is the third highest earning government leader with 252,400 euros, followed by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin with 240,000 euros.
Lowest paid are the government leaders of Slovakia (39,100 euros), Poland (53,400 euros) and the Czech Republic (64,900 euros), said the report.
The study underlined that even top-earning premiers in Europe are being paid far less than they would be earning in private business for similar levels of responsibility.
European government chiefs are only getting about 10 to 20 per cent of what they could be earning in the private sector, the Hay Group report said.
