TURIN, ITALY - German chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday congratulated the German Olympic team for their medal-topping showing at the Turin Winter Games.

"You have achieved a number of great results for which I congratulate you. You confirmed in an emphatic way that Germany remains one of the biggest winter sport nations," Merkel said in a letter to German Olympic Committee chief Klaus Steinbach and all the athletes.

"You also represented Germany in an honorary way through your impeccable behaviour in Turin," said Merkel.

Led by three-time biathlon gold medallist Michael Greis, Germany claimed 11 gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals to top the medals table ahead of the United States (9-9-7) and Austria (9-7-7) at the February 10-26 Games in Turin.
