German Chancellor Angela Merkel Wednesday picked Jens Weidmann, a close economic aide, to be the next head of the country's central bank after the surprise resignation last week of Axel Weber.

"Anyone who knows Jens Weidmann knows that he has excellent professional competence, a brilliant intellect and that he is of an independent mind," Merkel told reporters.
