Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives lost power in their German heartland after nearly six decades, exit polls showed Sunday, with the Greens likely to lead their first-ever state government.

The opposition Social Democrats and Greens appeared to win a combined 48 percent of the vote in the rich state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, edging out Merkel's party and their allies, the Free Democrats, who look set to claim 43.7 percent between them.
