Merkel due to visit Athens next week

German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to visit Greece next week for talks with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

"I can confirm the chancellor intends to travel to Athens on April 11 to hold talks with her Greek counterpart," Georg Streiter told reporters.

Details on the programme will be made public on Friday, he added.

Merkel faced mass protests during her last visit to Athens at the height of the eurozone debt crisis in October 2012 over Berlin's insistence on biting budget cuts in return for assistance.

Greece has been struggling to exit a crippling recession and a highly unpopular austerity framework adopted in return for bailout loans from the International Monetary Fund and European Union.

But the peripheral eurozone nation is expected to post weak growth this year and may even post a budget surplus.
