Berlin (dpa) - In Germany's first comment on the conviction and sentencing to death of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday her government did not approve of the death penalty.

On the other hand, it was right that the era of the Saddam regime was being reviewed in the courts, she said.

Merkel spoke after attending a special cabinet meeting in Berlin on Germany's upcoming European Union presidency.

Saddam and two co-defendants was sentenced to death earlier in the day for the killing of 148 Shiites in 1982.

Germany has abolished the death penalty and regularly criticizes its use by other nations.
