BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday congratulated acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on his victory in the Israeli elections.

Germany hoped the outcome would result in a continuation of the Mideast peace process, government spokesman Thomas Steg said.

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told parliament the election result showed a majority of the Israeli population was in favour of achieving progress on the way to peace.

Steinmeier repeated Germany's demand for the radical Islamic movement Hamas to renounce violence and recognise Israel's right to exist, following its victory in the Palestinian elections in January.

Olmert's Kadima party emerged as the largest party from Tuesday's vote with 28 seats in parliament, followed by the Labour Party on 20 seats.
