Berlin (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel Wednesday called the slaying of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel "a cowardly act."

"We want to see an independent Lebanon and forceful efforts to end violence," she said during a parliamentary debate in Berlin.

Merkel telephoned Lebanese Premier Fouad Seniora on Tuesday to express her condolences and pledge Germany's continued support for the rebuilding of Lebanon.

Gemayel, a member of the anti-Syrian faction in the Lebanese government, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen from a speeding car Tuesday as he prepared to leave Beirut's Jedidah neighbourhood.
