Merkel 'aghast' at Love Parade stampede deaths
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday she was "aghast" at the stampede at the Love Parade in the western German city of Duisburg that cost at least 15 revellers their lives.
"In these difficult hours, my thoughts are with the relatives of the victims. They have my sympathy and my condolences."
"Young people came to party. Instead, there was death and injury. I am aghast and saddened by the sorrow and the pain," she said in a statement.
At least 15 people were crushed to death earlier on Saturday when mass panic triggered a stampede inside a tunnel at the Love Parade techno music festival in Duisburg, according to police.
