Merkel: Greece euro exit not an option

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that expelling debt-wracked Greece from the eurozone was "not an option," warning that such talk added to uncertainty in the markets.

Asked whether it was conceivable that Greece could leave the euro, Merkel replied: "No. I say very clearly no."

"What we need is a quick reaction for the stability of the eurozone as a whole and everything that takes us away from this central goal is at the moment not an option ... we do not need uncertainty, but certainty," she said.

Merkel added that she had "faith" in negotiations the International Monetary Fund and the European Union were holding with Greece to resolve the country's debt crisis.

"I have faith in the negotiations being conducted with Greece" by the IMF and the European Commission, she told reporters.
