Zwickau, Germany (dpa) - A German court jailed a husband on Thursday for imposing a five-year ordeal of horrifying tortures on his wife, including throttling her with a cord and giving her electric shocks.

The woman, 29, testified that he had also half-suffocated her with plastic bags over her head and once turned a metal screw in her foot. Defence lawyers contended she had invented the events. Judges disagreed and imposed a 93-month term on the husband, 33.

The verdict of the court in Zwickau, eastern Germany can still be appealed.
