Neckargemuend, Germany (dpa) - An able-bodied man riding a wheelchair for fun was seriously injured when he fell down an elevator shaft, police in the south-western German town of Neckargemuend said Sunday.

While taking the wheelchair back to a friend, the 20-year-old sat in the vehicle while another man pushed it at high speed through an 11th-storey corridor at a trade-training school on Saturday evening.

Inexperienced at steering it, he crashed into the closed door of the lift.

Police said the lower bolts of the door broke, the chair tipped forward and the man slid out through the gap and fell 12 metres onto the roof of the elevator car which was descending at that moment.

His injuries were severe though not critical, but no details were given. An inquiry is to examine why the lift entrance gave way.
