German police said Saturday they had arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of arson over a series of fires on the posh North Sea island of Sylt that have caused extensive damage.

The suspect was arrested overnight when five blazes erupted on the island, a playground for Germany's rich and famous which attracts socialites, business titans and celebrities in the summer months.

The fires were in bushes, on a stage at a bar, in a container and a rubbish bin at a train station, as well as on the roof of a house and a lean-to, local police said.

They said it was not immediately clear if they were linked to a rash of other blazes in the previous eight days including at a hotel, a training academy and a pensioners' home in which four people were injured.

Around 400 people were made temporarily homeless by the fires while authorities estimated the damage at several hundred thousand euros.
