Munich (dpa) - A 35-year-old man was due to appear before a magistrate Thursday on charges of stabbing and setting fire to his ex-wife hours after the couple were divorced.

The 24-year-old woman died of her injuries in hospital, but the Iraqi couple's 5-year-old son, who witnessed Wednesday afternoon's attack in Garching near Munich, was uninjured, police said.

Police said the man lay in wait as the woman returned to her flat and attacked her with a knife. When she tried to flee he caught up with her and doused her with petrol, which he set alight.

Neighbours tried to put out the flames with water before a policeman arrived and arrested the attacker.

The victim suffered fatal burns to the face and upper part of her body, police said.
