Leipzig (dpa) - The man accused of the murder of a nine-year-old boy in Leipzig in February admitted to a court in the eastern German city Tuesday that he had sexually abused and killed the child.
The 43-year-old man, who remains unnamed under German media conventions, told the court he had assaulted the boy, named only as Mitja, on February 22 and then killed him. The body was found two days later.
The case drew international attention. Footage of Mitja and the man, filmed on closed-circuit television on a city tram, was widely shown.
The accused was arrested after throwing himself in front of a tram on March 1.
He is reported to have previous convictions for sex offences dating back as much as 25 years. Judgement in the case is set for September 11.
