Lufthansa reports gain in operating profit
The German flag carrier Lufthansa on Wednesday announced a sharp rise in its second quarter operating profit and said it had narrowed its net loss in the first half of the year.
Europe's leading carrier said core operating earnings in the second quarter rose to 159 million euros (206 million dollars) from 52 million euros in second quarter 2009.
In the first six months of the year, according to a Lufthansa stock market statement, the company's overall net loss narrowed to 104 million euros from 178 million a year earlier.
Net earnings for the second quarter were not disclosed.
The carrier reported an operating loss in the first six months of 2010 of 171 million euros after a profit of 8.0 million in first half 2009.
The company said sales in the second quarter rose to 6.9 billion euros from 5.2 billion in the same period of 2009.
Lufthansa is scheduled to release detailed financial results on Thursday.
