Lufthansa posts operating loss

12 May 2004 , FRANKFURT - German airline Lufthansa reported Wednesday that it posted an operating loss of EUR 116 million in the first quarter of 2004, a major improvement from the losses of a year earlier. Lufthansa said the figure compares with operating red ink of EUR 419 million in the first quarter of 2003, a year when the company suffered a record loss of nearly EUR 1.0 billion.

FRANKFURT - German airline Lufthansa reported Wednesday that it posted an operating loss of EUR 116 million in the first quarter of 2004, a major improvement from the losses of a year earlier.

Lufthansa said the figure compares with operating red ink of EUR 419 million in the first quarter of 2003, a year when the company suffered a record loss of nearly EUR 1.0 billion.

Through the sale of holdings, the company achieved a group profit of EUR 62 million in the first quarter, compared with EUR 356 million losses in the same period last year, Lufthansa said.

Turnover in the first quarter came to EUR 3.9 billion, up 5.2 percent on the previous-year period, the airline said.
