Leipzig, Germany (dpa) - A child-killer who lured a 9-year-old schoolboy during a ride on a city tram was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison with no parole by a German court.

A picture taken by closed-circuit television showed Uwe K, 43, and the boy, Mitja, both smiling as they sat next to one another during a ride through Leipzig in February.

After gaining the boy's trust, K took him home, raped him and choked him to death.

The state court in Leipzig directed that if K ever qualified for parole from his life sentence, he must be transferred to preventive- detention status, ensuring he can never be released.

Judges said K, who had previous convictions for sexually abusing children, was a danger to the public.

K had twice told the court, "I wish to apologize though I know there can be no excuse for what I did."
