BERLIN - A Lebanese national living in Berlin narrowly escaped injury or death Sunday when a nail bomb exploded as he opened his apartment door, police said, adding that they had not ruled out a political motive for the attack.

The bomb was attached to the outside of the door of the fourth-storey apartment in such a way that it would explode when the door opened from within. A police spokesman said it was a miracle that the man, 47, was not hit by shrapnel when he triggered the blast.

He was being treated for shock and "detonation trauma". Detectives have yet to establish why he was attacked. They said the man's wife, their adult son and their adult daughter were all in the apartment at the time. All were Lebanese nationals, police said.
