Late German dance legend Bausch's successors named

The famed choreographer who died in June was the director of a renowned dance theatre in the western city of Wuppertal.

Berlin -- Dominique Mercy and Robert Sturm have been named as the pair tapped to take over the German dance company once led by the iconic choreographer Pina Bausch, who died in June, the theatre said Monday.

Frenchman Mercy has been a dancer at the company since 1973 and Sturm, a German, was Bausch's artistic assistant for 10 years, said the dance theatre in the western city of Wuppertal where she was director for over 35 years.

They have accepted the appointment, the theatre added in a statement.

During a glittering career as a choreographer, Bausch scooped a host of prizes, including a Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and nomination to the French Legion d'Honneur in 2003.

She died suddenly on June 30 aged 68.
