HAMBURG - The ongoing battle between heavyweight boxers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko and boxing promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl will be ruled on by a German court before Christmas.

The Klitschkos are in a legal battle with their former promoters, Universum, over whether the contracts between them ended on 30 April of this year or if, as Universum claimed, they should be extended because the two were - at times - not able to box due to injuries.

Judge Kai Mueckenheim ruled in a Hamburg court on Thursday that a ruling will be handed down on 16 December whether the pair's separation from their promoter on 1 May was legal or not.

The court heard four hours and forty minutes of evidence from Kohl and Wilhelm Hellhake, a former lawyer of the Klitschkos, although Wladimir Klitschko, who was present, was not called to the witness box.

"I believe I'm in the right," said Kohl afterwards. "But I never thought it would drag on for so long."

When the two parties first signed a contract in 1996, it had a clause that the contract would be lengthened by the period that the two boxers could not fight.

When the contract was renewed on 25 March 2001, this clause was no longer in the contract, but Universum maintain that based on the first contract, the clause was still valid.

WBC world champion Vitali Klitschko is due to defend his title against Britain's Danny Williams on December 11 in Las Vegas, with his two million dollar purse apparently being put aside should he and Wladimir have to pay compensation to Universum.
