HAMBURG - Former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann won't be at a ceremony at which he is to receive the German Order of Merit from German president Horst Kohler.

Klinsmann told Tuesday's edition of Bild newspaper that he will not attend the August 14 ceremony because others should take centre stage.

"I feel very honoured," he said. "But I won't accept the award in person. I need a little more time away (from the team). And this date is two days before the first post-World Cup international. Others should take centre stage."

Klinsmann is to be honoured for taking Germany to third place at the recent home World Cup and creating a national euphoria with attacking football. The players will receive the Silver Laurel from the head of state in Berlin.

Klinsmann did not renew his contract after two years, with his assistant Loew promoted to head coach. Loew's first game is an August 16 friendly with Sweden.

Klinsmann told Bild he did not regret stepping down and reiterated that he will take time off for at least six months to regain his physical and mental strength and to have time for his family.

Looking at his future, Klinsmann remained vague about accepting a US coaching job which will be vacated at the end of the year by Bruce Arena. US football officials have already hinted that Klinsmann is a top candidate.

"I need time. I will take at least six months off," he said.
