BERLIN - An unemployed executive in Berlin, unable to find work for two years, has put himself up for auction on the Internet, reports said Thursday.

Bernd Lamprecht, 38, a former restaurant manager and telecommunications firm executive, is listed with eBay at a starting bid price of EUR 1, offering personal business consultancy services.

Interviewed on national television, Lamprecht explained that his unemployment benefits expire 1 January under a new law aimed at trimming government spending. The law says that benefits can be cancelled for recipients whose spouses are working or who have life insurance or a savings account.

Lamprecht was once a McDonald's restaurant manager and later was a middle-management executive with a phone company, earning EUR 3,000 a month until the company went bust.

"I never thought it would come to this," Lamprecht told ZDF television. "Once I use up my life's savings, I'll be out on the street unless I can find work."

The eBay auction ends Monday.
